What Are the First Signs of a Case of RSV? Common Symptoms & Treatment Options for RSV

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a contagious viral infection that can affect both the upper and lower respiratory tracts. It spreads easily from person to person, and while most healthy adults will experience mild cold-like symptoms from contracting RSV, it can be potentially life threatening for at-risk individuals including the elderly, young children, immunocompromised individuals, and anyone with underlying lung conditions like asthma or COPD. Identifying the symptoms of RSV early is essential so that you can limit spread and treat your symptoms.

At Priority 1 Urgent Care, we understand that acute respiratory illness cases rise in the fall and winter months. That is why our office is open every day of the week to provide convenient care for patients who are feeling sick. If you think you have RSV, or are just feeling under the weather, walk into our office for same-day care, or save a spot online in advance below.

RSV Symptoms in Adults to Watch Out For

RSV affects the respiratory system. In most cases, healthy adults will experience cold or flu-like symptoms. However, since RSV is so contagious and can make certain individuals very sick, identifying symptoms of RSV early is critical. If you notice cold-like symptoms forming, you could be developing a case of RSV. Watch out for the following symptoms associated with RSV in adults:

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Severe and persistent cough

  • Mild fever

  • Runny nose

  • Wheezing

  • Shortness of breath

What to Do If You Think You Have a Case of RSV?

Early RSV symptoms can mimic cold and flu symptoms. If you think you’re developing RSV symptoms, you should always seek medical care for an evaluation and diagnostic testing. Usual evaluation for RSV includes a swab in your nose which tests for the Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

If you do test positive for RSV, it is important to discuss whether you’re considered ‘at-risk’ for severe symptoms or complications from RSV. In most cases, your immune system can fight off a case of RSV with a little rest, proper hydration and using OTC medications to manage symptoms. However, certain individuals may require supportive care if they have underlying conditions or compromised immune systems.

Is There a Vaccine for RSV?

RSV is a viral infection like the flu; however, unlike the flu, there is not a widely recommended RSV vaccine available. There is an RSV vaccine available for certain at-risk individuals, including pregnant women, patients over 75 years of age, or patients over 50 years of age who have underlying health conditions. Your medical provider will be able to determine your eligibility for the vaccine if necessary. However, most healthy adults do not require the RSV vaccine, since their immune systems can fight off the infection.
